A report released recently by the Ministry of Transport & quoted in the media has indicated actual expenditure on ports revamping during 2004 reached L.E. 606 million. The same report predicted spending about L.E. 2 billion [about $ 345 million] for the same purpose over the next few years. Targeted is to increase the ports design capacities to 190 million tons by 2010 up from 69.3 million tons at present divided on 15 ports on both the Mediterranean & the Red Sea, disposing on about 179 docks. Report showed that total ports direct revenues, excluding customs & other duties & taxes, increased in 2004 by 25 % to L.E. 2.24 billion up from L.E. 1.8 billion in 2003. Also containers handling volume at those ports increased in 2004 to the equivalent of 2.9 million standard containers marking 27 % growth above its level in 2003. Egypt targets the number of containers to increase to 5 million by 2007. |
