| Description | A maritime transport economics expert identified as Mr. Sami Awad has expressed aggressive views towards Egypt's need to optimize its exploitation of Suez Canal, claiming the Canal could achieve $ 10 billion + annually to the country treasury. All what is needed, in his view, is paving the way for more investment projects on both Canal Sides hosting factories, workshops, warehouses & fuelling centers. That needs to be accompanied with the double tracking of the Canal to overcome 12 hours waiting time for each tanker or vessel to cross in either direction, hence increasing its annual capacity to 28,000 vessels & tankers. Scheme would also require a review of the Canal crossing toll rates to be attractive for all commercial vessels. On his side, a consultant to SCA - Suez Canal Authority, identified as Mr. Mohamed Daoud, has called for more IT solutions to revise SCA performance including an electronic access to canal crossing services away from telex & telefax. He further called for more international IT aided efforts to identify & follow up international commodities trading deals which could incorporate Suez Canal crossing opportunities. Mr. Daoud called for further efforts to be spent in building a database on international trade & maritime transport leads to turn into a decision support base for SCA executives. |
