| Description | $ 6 million funding applied for by the USAID to back a GIS aided project to link maps of potable water stations & distribution networks now operated by 14 (state owned) companies countrywide. Media reports have quoted Dr. Eng Abdel Kawi Khalifa, CEO of the recent formed Holding Co. for Potable Water & Sanitary Drainage, indicating that budget deficit of those (14) companies, now reporting to the Governorates, is put at L.E. 1.6 billion and need be offset by June 2005. Dr. Khalifa has revealed that a protocol signed with the US side does exist, providing for the receipt of a USAID grant, yet it expires by the end of 2005 and efforts are now spent by the Holding Co. to extend it for another year. Failing to benefit from the said (easily accessible) funding would generate a liability on the Holding Co. to arrange L.E. 1.8 billion self-financed funds to overcome the issue. Meanwhile Dr. Eng. Khalifa has revealed that the board of the Regulatory Agency for Potable Water & Sanitary Drainage, duly & legally constituted, has not yet been named till date. |
